…You first need:
1. A foundation;
2. The shell (floors, walls, and ceilings); and
3. Décor.
If you do not have all 3 in that order, you usually end up with either:
1. A hole in the ground; or
2. A house (not a home).
But what if I were to tell you that your personal development relied on the same 3 principles?
You see, over 6 years as a mentor with the RPS and privately, I have learned that, on the whole, the thing that stops people from progressing and achieving usually falls into one of 3 categories, these are:
1. Competence;
2. Confidence; and
3. Comfort.
IN THAT ORDER!!
For me, all development and growth must be based on the FOUNDATION of a firm evidence-based competence, but confidence isn't enough alone. In my view "having the knowledge" is the bare minimum required... It will not make you an outstanding clinician.
To competence, we must then add an "imaginative confidence" which will make our approach and the delivery of our competence unique to those listening, such that they not only are more likely to act on the advice given but also increase their confidence in you and your practice. Thus confidence provides shelter to our patients in the knowledge that they are in safe hands and that we are on hand if they need further guidance. However, confidence and competence together, while giving us the beginnings of quality, lack the uniqueness that an individualized patient-centred approach could provide... Just like living in a house that doesn't feel like home.
Enter the interior designers!!! , the third C, comfort, is the cherry on the icing which takes you from being a good clinician, to a great one. Being comfortable with your patients and their questions and concerns. you will be able to tailor your approach to each individual such that they really feel you understand their individual circumstances... and when your patient feels at ease with you, that's when they will perceive you as the outstanding clinician you can be....
The three C's are my mentoring mantra and the focus of my mentoring method. using them,
I can help you develop into the type of clinician that you want to be!!!
THE CHOICE OF WHO YOU WANT TO BE... IS YOURS!!
